Wychavon Youth Bus
Transformation
Dave Hemming, Community Safety Manager in Wychavon wanted to find a dynamic way of responding to the needs of young people in rural villages around Wychavon. Working with a range of community partners and linking with the regional Youth Service he became increasingly aware of a lack of provision of responsive engaging services.
'Young People in the villages deserve the same support as young people in the towns'. Dave Hemming
One morning driving through the beautiful countryside, Dave was inspired and using his local knowledge and extensive network of community contacts had soon found a 'retired' coach that needed a makeover. Dave put together successful funding applications and acquired the coach and with the support of enthusiastic colleagues led by Rob Mace (Youth Service Manager) consulted with young people in the regions rural community.
'We didn't want to guess what the young people wanted on the bus and the consultation workshops made sure we listened to them, they had some brilliant suggestions and we included their design ideas into our planning process' Rob Mace
Over a short period of just a few months the coach was transformed into a mobile Youth Bus that has excellent multi media facilities on board and also doubles as an outdoor performance space fully equipped with staging, light and sound.
The bus made it's debut in February and was an instant hit providing a 'neutral territory' that young people relate to and feel comfortable using. They are really pleased with the outcome and are involved in the planning of events and use of the bus in the future.
'It's great to have something for us because there was nothing before and seeing our ideas come true is really cool' Abby 15
