Baxter Pyramid
Literacy Project
Across the six schools in the Baxter pyramid, Baxter College, Birchen Coppice, Foley Park, Franche, St John’s CE and Sutton Park, children have been working together alongside various partners, such as the Kidderminster Shuttle and Worcester Evening News, to create a Pyramid-wide newspaper. This forms part of the pyramid's ongoing work towards raising literacy levels and strengthening inter-school partnerships.
The newspaper, which is currently being distributed across the pyramid, has been created, written and edited entirely by the children involved, with the support of their teachers, local creative practitioners and Worcestershire County Council's Extended Services Team. The children have enjoyed the creative and hands-on aspects of the project, and in particular using digital tools to create the finished article.
''Following several months of hard work by our Young Journalists, we are now in the process of printing the final newspapers ready for distribution to the schools. The project is now nearing its close, with the pupils' trips to Worcester Evening News following during the next couple of weeks.
I'm pleased to say that it's been a great success overall, and I've have been really impressed at the pupils' enthusiasm, commitment and their quality of work throughout the project. The level of dedication and support teaching staff, support staff and volunteers have shown time after time has also been exceptional.
Thanks also to the various partners who have supported the children's efforts, including The Kidderminster Shuttle's Chief Editor, Clive Joyce, Baxter College for their resources and ongoing support, and last but not least Pablo Productions, who have been instrumental in putting the newspaper together''
- Rebecca Hendry – Extended Services Coordinator.
The finished newsletter is an exciting, enjoyable and informative read of mixed subjects and is available as a resource download (see right) for the whole community to enjoy.
